Why We Traded the Park for Pink Walls and Gelato

A few weeks ago, I set up a mommy and me photography session inside Milky Moments Gelato in Old Town Temecula. Not in front of it for the pretty window light. Inside it. Pink walls, gelato in every shade, a mom and her little one sharing a cup at a tiny café table tucked near the Historic Jail and the Temecula Mining Company.

No park. No neutral linen dress. No “golden hour field” that every third family in the Temecula Valley has already used this year.

And it might be some of my favorite work all year.

The Problem With “Pretty” Locations

Here’s the part I’ll say that most photographers won’t: the oversaturated, neutral toned, wheat field and white blanket aesthetic isn’t timeless. It’s a trend. And trends fade. What doesn’t fade is a photo that actually smells like your life, your kid’s favorite Tuesday afternoon, the way she always gets pistachio and leaves half of it on her chin.

A field is beautiful. It is also, at this point, everywhere across the Inland Empire. When I sit down with a family in Temecula, Murrieta, or Menifee and ask what makes them “them,” the answer is almost never a field. It’s a specific bakery. A hiking trail they’ve walked a hundred times. A record shop. A gelato counter where the owner already knows the kid’s order.

Photos that come from a real, specific place in your life age better than photos that come from a Pinterest board.

Why Milky Moments Gelato Worked

This particular session wasn’t chosen for the gelato. It was chosen for pink.

Pink is this family’s color. It’s in the cookware, the bedding, the wall colors at home, the accessories, even the kid’s backpack. So when I was scouting locations, I wasn’t looking for “a cute shop.” I was looking for a place that already spoke their language. Milky Moments Gelato happens to be drenched in pink from floor to ceiling, and they turn their gelato into sweet little animal faces, including a capybara that happens to be this little girl’s favorite. That’s not a coincidence I could have staged in a field.

So we leaned all the way in. Styling pulled from a nostalgic, girly wardrobe: hair tinsel, silly oversized glasses, kitschy ice cream shaped purses, pink florals layered on denim, ruffled tops. Every piece was chosen to match the shop instead of standing apart from it, so the whole scene reads like one cohesive world instead of a kid plopped in front of a cute wall.

And because the location already meant something, there were real moments to work with. Genuine giggling at a capybara mascot. A spoon offered back and forth. Gelato on a nose. Reactions that happen because something is actually delightful to a four year old, not because a photographer just said “look excited.”

This Is Where the “Location Scout” Part of My Job Comes In

I get asked a lot why my sessions cost more than someone who will meet you at a park for an hour. Part of the answer is exactly this: the groundwork you never see.

Before this session happened, I had to:

• Identify a shop with the right color story, light, and layout for a session, not just a dessert run
• Reach out to the business owner and get permission to shoot there, which most photographers skip and most families don’t know they need
• Time the session around slower shop hours so we weren’t in anyone’s way
• Plan styling that would complement the space instead of fighting it
• Think through backup angles in case the shop was busier than expected

A client shouldn’t have to be a location scout, a stylist, and a permissions negotiator on top of being a parent trying to get their toddler to cooperate for photos. • A used bookstore with good window light
• A favorite diner booth
• A quiet aisle at a nursery or plant shop

• Your own kitchen, mid pancake making chaos

The through line isn’t the location itself. It’s that the location means something. That’s the difference between a photo you’ll love in ten years and a photo that looks like every other photo in your feed this month.
